“The Gap” Photo Essay
Project Overview
This poetry photo essay explores the experience of losing my grandmother and the space her death leaves behind. The work combines a sequence of analog photographs taken around her funeral with a poem divided into separate stanzas. Each stanza is paired with an image, allowing the photographs and text to form a fragmented narrative of grief, memory, and absence.
Workflow
The poem is printed on transparent paper and layered over the photographs. As the sheets overlap, the words become increasingly obscured and difficult to read. The only text that remains consistently legible is the title, “The Gap.” This physical layering reflects the way memories become fragmented after loss: individual moments remain, but their meaning can become blurred, interrupted, or difficult to hold onto.
